Talk-back Radio
A Melbourne radio station introduced radio talkback in
1967.
On 17th April, 1967, 3AW was the first station in Australia to take advantage of
new legislation authorising the broadcasting of telephone calls (with an
obligatory seven second delay). Before then, the law had banned the recording of
telephone calls and, accordingly, the Post Master General's Department had
squashed early experiments with talkback radio.
Well-known radio host, Steve Price is quoted in The Age as saying,
"The Poms can't do it at all. The Americans have a strange way of doing it.
We (Australians) do it better than anyone."
